Biography
Dr. Rushdi Alsaleh is an associate professor in Northeastern University since September 2024. Dr. Alsaleh’s research has been focused on improving road safety analysis and evaluation techniques, developing novel techniques for analyzing and modeling active road user in shared spaces using recent advances in machine learning (ML), improving the current knowledge of the safety implications of highway designs, and developing and evaluating Intelligent Transportation System (ITS).
Abstract
This presentation introduces a comprehensive AI-driven framework for proactive traffic safety management, shifting the paradigm from reactive crash analysis to predictive and preventive strategies. The work addresses advanced microsimulation modelling that captures complex interactions and replicates traffic conflict indicators. The framework enables a more realistic representation of real-world behaviours. Validated using data from congested intersections in high-density urban settings in several countries, the proposed approach demonstrates its effectiveness in replicating observed conflict dynamics and assessing safety performance with high accuracy. Beyond improving current safety evaluations, this research provides critical insights for the development and testing of autonomous vehicle algorithms, supporting the design of safer and more adaptive future transportation systems.
